A cataract is a medical condition in which the lens of the eye gradually becomes opaque or cloudy, resulting in blurred vision. Cataracts can develop in one or both eyes, and are very common in people over 65. They are painless, but can lead to blindness if left untreated.
There are two main types of cataract: age-related cataracts (the most common), and health-related cataracts, which may develop after surgery for ocular conditions such as glaucoma, or as a consequence of diabetes or an eye injury – sometimes years later.
Regardless of what caused your cataracts, there are a variety of treatments available. You and your eye doctor will find the solution that best suits you and your lifestyle.
Traditionally, cataract surgery has offered patients a choice between correcting their long-sightedness or their short-sightedness. Recent advances in intraocular lens technology mean that now you can select an artificial lens that corrects near, middle, and long distance vision.
